No need to disrupt everything

A lot of entrepreneurs are striving to “disrupt” industries and business models when, in fact, all an industry might need is a little tweak.

I’m in favor of finding smarter ways to improve transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, and other industries, but instead of trying to create an entirely new business, perhaps we should place more value on improving existing systems and methodologies that are proven profit centers.

While the dream of building a tech unicorn (including the fame and fortune that comes with it) is alive and wonderful, entrepreneurs shouldn’t forget that there are a number of great technology companies that solve a specific business problem and are quietly very successful and profitable. The analogy that I often use is that a lot of tech entrepreneurs try to hit home runs, while hitting singles, doubles, and triples are perfectly good results.

So, if you are considering starting a new business, you should stop thinking about disrupting an industry and think about improving that industry.
